Scotland’s Mental Health First Aid Course – Young People

Main Aim

This course allows participants, who work or care for a young person aged between 10 and 16, to learn how mental health first aid can be applied in crisis and non-crisis situations.

Who is this for?

This course is suitable for those who wish to be a Mental Health First Aider and who want to offer support to young people.

Furthermore professional groups from junior to senior level management such as:

  • School Teachers
  • Teaching Support  and Administration Staff

are welcomed.

Along with these demographics, health and social care staff including:

  • Doctors
  • Nurses
  • Social Workers

are equally welcomed.

Learning Outcomes

  • Gain an understanding of mental health problems including depression, anxiety, panic attacks, psychosis, self-harm, suicide as well as drugs and alcohol
  • Learn how to recognise if someone is experiencing a mental health problem
  • Learn skills to provide initial support and help a young person who is developing a difficulty with their mental health problems or distress
  • To support people to access appropriate help, including both professional support and evidence-based self-help strategies
  • Explore the relationship between mental health, mental ill health and other health related behaviours and lifestyle choices

2 Days (one day is face-to-face and the other is virtual learning)
