Low / No Wealth

Having access to wealth (including financial products, equity from housing, and a decent pension) provides some protection from socio-economic disadvantage, particularly when the wealth comes in the form of accessible savings. Savings can help households deal with problems that arise on a day-to-day basis. Discussion on inequality often focuses on how unequally income is distributed, but wealth is even more unequally distributed than income.

There are several national and local data sources giving information on wealth.

Available indicators include:

  • those contained within SIMD for income, employment, housing – these components of SIMD are listed separately and can be downloaded and analysed at a data-zone level.
  • poverty and homelessness dashboard at local authority level showing trends
  • ‘priority places for food’ by intermediate-zone
  • households with no private transport by intermediate zone
