Causes of Deaths

Amongst females, the top 20 causes of death accounted for 50% of all deaths in Grampian while for males the top 20 causes accounted for 44% (NRS Deaths). Lung cancer (malignant neoplasma) was the most common cause of death for females and heart attack (acute myocardial infarction) for males.

Many of the causes of death are common to both females (Figure 54) and males (Figure 55). However Dementia and Alzheimer’s Disease feature more prominently in females list than the male, reflecting longer life expectancy. Four of the eight most common causes of female death were related to Dementia and Alzheimer’s Disease as opposed to two out of eight for males.
